A thinking framework for probation and electronic monitoring in the digital futu

    DESCRIÇÃO

    SINOPSE

This is a reduced version of the book Execution ff Community Sanctions and Measures – Probation, Electronic Monitoring and Juvenile Justice – in the Digital Future published in Portugal. Its axis concerns on the future of the probation system which, in its broadest sense, also integrates electronic monitoring, juvenile justice and technical assistance to the courts. Here, international readers can get some of its chapters that go beyond the national dimension, being of interest at least at a European level, namely texts more directly related to the idea of a roadmap for the future and how to prepare systems and agencies for the challenges that come with 21th century technologies in a social - and perhaps politically - difficult environment. The technologization of the society can threaten the basis of probation: the human factor, the pedagogical and low-intensity control relationship with offenders. With the scarcity of human resources, wrongly considered expensive, there is a high risk of insensitive politicians taking steps in replacing, voluntarily or not, probation officers for machines. The technology exists, AI is expanding, so it is legitimate and pertinent to ask ourselves how probation will use technologies, putting them at its service or allowing itself to be annihilated by them? We hope readers can find clues for reflection on these themes.
